The method · How it works

Sensory Alchemy™

The art and science of changing how you feel, through the senses, the body and the mind.

How you feel shapes your experience of the world. Grounded, creative, inspired, loved, wise: these are ways of being you can nurture, through a daily practice of the senses, the body and the mind. Return to the feelings you want to inhabit, and make room for them in everyday life.

Feeling good is not by chance. It is by practice.

The loop

Four steps, in sequence, designed to be repeated.

NoticeChoosePracticeReturn

Notice. What am I feeling, and what is happening for me. Say it to yourself as it is. You do not have to push a feeling away to make room for a better one; you only have to notice it, and let it be where you are starting from.

Choose. What would feel supportive now. Choose the state you are reaching for, from the five, each with its meaning beside it.

Practice. You receive three practices, one through the senses, one through the body and one through the mind. Each is a way to feel the state you have chosen. Do one, or all three. Every practice is an invitation, never an instruction.

Return. To yourself. How do you feel now? Give yourself a moment with whatever is there. If the state you chose has arrived, stay in it a while. Notice what you want to carry into the rest of the day, and what you need next. That is the round. Kept daily, it is the practice: you come back to it whatever the day has been, because these states become home by being lived in.

Five states. Three pathways. Fifteen elements. One daily practice.

Grounded, creative, inspired, loved and wise: five doorways into feeling good. Choose what you need in the moment, then explore through the senses, the body and the mind. Return to the practice, and the feelings it helps you generate, as often as life asks.

Within the three pathways, fifteen elements offer ways to explore how you feel.

Through the senses

  • Scent
  • Colour
  • Sound
  • Touch
  • Art and design

Explore how what you sense and the beauty around you can shape how you feel.

Scent reaches how you feel before you have had a thought about it, which is why a single breath of something can turn a moment. Colour is felt, not read: a room, a cloth, a page can settle you or lift you before you know why. Sound sets the pace of a room and of the body in it. Touch, given or received, is the oldest reassurance there is. And art and design are how you bring all of these into what you look at and live among.

Through the body

  • Body map
  • Movement
  • Breath
  • Massage
  • Rest

Notice what your body is holding, and explore what helps you move, soften and rest.

The body keeps how you feel before you have words for it. Tension gathers in the jaw, the shoulders, the belly; breath goes short and high. None of this is a fault; it is the body doing what bodies do under load, and it can be worked with directly. The body map shows you where you are holding. Slow, deliberate movement lets held muscle release. A longer exhale than inhale is something you can feel change in a minute. Massage brings warmth and blood to where the hands are placed. Rest is not the absence of practice; it is one of the elements, and the one most often skipped.

Through the mind

  • Meditation
  • Thought
  • Imagination
  • Word
  • Connection

Explore how attention, reflection and connection shape your experience of the day.

Where your attention goes, feeling follows. Meditation is attention given somewhere on purpose. A thought held for a minute changes the minute. A picture held in the mind changes the body that holds it. A word, written or said, gives a feeling a shape you can look at. And connection, reaching another person or reaching yourself, changes the room. The mind is the pathway we use all day without noticing, which is why noticing is the first step.
